John has been a Partner of the Firm for over 30 years and through that period has played a range of roles, both as a lawyer and as a manager.

John's experience has covered property development, planning and environmental law and more recently he has concentrated on government contracting and tendering and procurement, particularly in respect of the procurement of infrastructure projects.

Recent illustrative projects include:

• Advising NSW Health on, and preparing the initial transaction documents between the Health Administration Corporation (HAC), Hunter and New England Area Health Services (HNEAHS) and the parties representing the Mater Hospital for, the redevelopment of the Mater Hospital and relocation of allied health facilities to the redeveloped Mater Hospital site. This Project ultimately proceeded as a PPP.
• Advising NSW Health and HNEAHS on the procurement process, procurement documents and transaction documents for the construction of the Newcastle Community Health Centre.
• Advising a State owned corporation in relation to a $120 million infrastructure project under the NSW 'Working with Government' Guidelines. This included structuring, probity and all ancillary advice required for documentation of the Detailed Call for Proposals.

John's clients include State and Commonwealth authorities, Health Services, private sector health, property, resource and infrastructure developers, mining and port corporations.

John was the Firm's National Managing Partner from 2004 to 2009 and was a member of the Firm’s Board from 1995 to 2009, a period of substantial growth and expansion nationally for Sparke Helmore.
